Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is a vegetable that is common in kitchens throughout Asia and is also used for medical purposes in China, India, Central America and elsewhere around the world. In the West, it has become popular, mainly because of its benefits for diabetes. In the last few years, studies have shown that bitter melon and fruit extract can also be very effective in treating and preventing cancer, especially in breast cancer.

A significant development of bitter cancer and breast cancer came in 2010 through a joint study published in Cancer Research. Using cells, the study showed that the bitter melon extract “significantly reduces the proliferation” of cancer cells, inhibits cell growth, and even induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) in breast cancer cells.

“Our findings suggest that the bitter extract modulates several pathways of signal transmission, leading to the death of breast cancer cells,” said Professor Ratna B. Rai from the University of St. Louis.

Researcher Rajesh Agarwal, Ph.D., Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado in Denver, added: “This study can give us another agent as an extract that can be used against breast cancer if they are in the course of an additional study of the truth. “

The 2010 report is published six years ago, but many questions remained inadequate. Then, in 2013, scientists at the Chinese Medical University in Taiwan conducted research based on earlier Chinese findings that found new types of glycosidic substances in Bitter melon.

Researchers at the Chinese Medical University, partly based on previous research, found that glycosidic DMC found in bitter melon (which has an effect on insulin stabilization and glucose metabolism) also affected tumors of breast cancer. According to research, its ability to modulate these reactions on several fronts was also a catalyst for the death of breast cancer cells.

What are Glycosides?

Glycosides are a class of molecules found in plants in which the sugar molecule is bound to a sugar-free molecule. Many plants preserve medically important and biochemical active chemicals in the form of inactive glycosides.

Bitter melon contains glycosides such as vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids and polyphenols, all known cancer and immune system regulators. But how do glycosides actually work to fight cancer?

Glycosides use certain enzymes to trigger them in order to be able to do their job. Apart from bitter taste, these substances that affect the plants can be found in monk fruit, yams, blueberries, cherries, pineapples, linseed seeds, apricot seed and hundreds of other plants in the wild.

Certain types of glycosides, such as those found in monocultures, stevia and sweet sour cherries, are responsible for giving these substances their sweet taste. In addition to helping to regulate insulin levels, most importantly, glycosides are antioxidants that help reduce inflammation in the body (fruits such as cherries can help in conditions like arthritis and gout) and cancer protection.

Bitter Melon is a powerful cancer fighter

In addition to breast cancer, it has been shown that bitter melon is also effective on other forms of cancer. Study 2015, conducted by the Skaggs School of Pharmacia and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus has found that bitter melon juice (BMJ) reduces cellular communication in pancreatic cancer cells.

For most pancreatic cancers, they are known to be resistant to conventional chemotherapy, which is why pancreatic patients are known to survive rates (in those who use traditional cancer therapy). The detection of the effect of bitter melon on cellular signaling within the cancer cells has come about using drugs resistant to pancreatic cells.
